Overview
This course is designed to allow supervisors, team leaders and managers to understand the laws, regulations and delicate issues that surround disciplinary issues and employee grievances. In a two-day workshop, the course will cover relevant employment law, practical advice on managing hearings, and developing disciplinary policies.
Aims and Objectives
This course aims to provide a clear overview of the processes, issues and legislation around disciplinary grievances, helping managers to deal with them calmly, professionally and with sensitivity.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, learners are expected to have a good understanding of both spoken and written English.

The course is divided into ten modules, followed by an interactive session with a number of case studies and role-plays.
- Relevant Legislation and What the Law Requires
This topic covers direct and impacting legislation, as well as the ACAS Code of Conduct and the role and influence of ACAS.
- Disciplinary Policies and Procedures
This topic looks at the purpose and essential features of a disciplinary policy, along with levels of disciplinary action and the nature of misconduct and gross misconduct.
- Conducting Disciplinary Hearings
In this section, we will cover the process of managing disciplinary hearings, including choosing and preparing a venue, the role of the representative, dealing with emotional situations, confidentiality and appropriate behaviours and communication.
- Preparing for Disciplinary Hearings
This topic reviews the process of conducting investigations, obtaining witness statements and other things to consider.
- Employee Rights in Disciplinary Situations
This section outlines employee rights, including the right to be accompanied, adequate notice and right to appeal.
- Communicating the Decision and any Follow-Up Action
In this section, we look at delivering the outcome of the grievance procedure with the authority and sensitivity it requires.
- Grievance Policies and Procedures
This section covers the purpose and essential features of a grievance procedure, as well as the necessary stages, timescales and potential outcomes.
- Conducting Grievance Hearings
This topic covers how to choose and prepare a venue, take notes and record events, deal with emotional situations, manage confidentiality and behave and communicate appropriately.
- Employee Rights in Grievance Situations
This section looks at the employee’s right to be accompanied, receive a written response, progress to a next stage and receive adequate notice.
- Follow-up Action
In this topic, the process of conducting investigations, obtaining witness statements and communicating the decision will be looked at in depth.
