Overview
The NEBOSH National General Certificate new 2018 syllabus effectively represents the role of a real-life health and safety professional and is the ideal choice for those who want to kick start a career as a health and safety professional. It combines extensive coverage of the main legal requirements for occupational safety in the UK with an outline of common workplace hazards and how to tackle them.
With over 175,000 awardees in the UK and worldwide, the NEBOSH National General Certificate is globally recognised as a standard for occupational health and safety proficiency.
Duration
This is a 10 day taught course, plus an Open Book Examination and an extended risk assesment practical.
Prerequisites
The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is open to all and does not require any previous accreditation. However, learners are expected to have a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Content
The National General Certificate is divided into two units, each of which is assessed separately:
NG1 – Management of Health & Safety (Elements 1-4)
NG2 – Control of Workplace Risks (Elements 5-11)

For learners, the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety gives you the vital knowledge you need to ensure health and safety in your workplace, and is a great foundation for building a career in the industry. You will discover new skills and techniques with practical applications and learn to perform better in your role.
Assessment
Assessment for NG1 will be by one Open Book Examination and for NG2 it is an extended risk assessment practical.
The NG1 exam will be carried out remotely by you, usually in your own home or another safe and suitable location where you can concentrate.
You will have access to the exam at 9am on the day and you will have up to 24 hours to complete your paper - although you should be able to complete the examination in 4-5 hours. Unlike the previous exam, you will be presented with a scenario that describes a realistic workplace and situation. You will then be asked to carry out a series of tasks using evidence presented in the scenario as well as the underpinning knowledge you have gained through your studies and revision.
For NG2, you will also be required to carry out a practical risk assessment assignment and action report carried out in your workplace.
Certification
The examination and assessment are assessed and moderated by NEBOSH. Successful learners will gain the full NEBOSH National General Certificate. Holders of the National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). The NEBOSH National General Certificate has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 15 SCQF credit points.
