This course aims to empower both individuals in the work place and communities to understand the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and how best to support themselves and those around them in recovery.

Overview

By providing skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid for mental health, the Mental Health First Aid (England) course aims to help individuals in the workplace and communities to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and understand how best to support themselves and those around them in recovery.

Aims & Objectives

  • To enable trainees to gain a Mental Health First Aid (England) award in Adult - Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
  • Spot the early signs of a possible mental health issue
  • Feel confident in how to offer and provide initial help to a person experiencing a mental health issue
  • Preserve life where a person may be at risk of harm to themselves or others
  • Help to stop mental health from getting worse and to give hope to someone who needs guidance
  • Promote recovery of good mental health
  • Guide someone towards appropriate treatment and other sources of help
  • Understand the stigma that exists around mental health
  • Provide help on a first aid basis

Duration

This course is 2 days long.

Prerequisites

Due to some of the sensitive subjects of the course students should be aware of that some people can find certain parts of the course difficult, although our instructors help everyone to feel safe and comfortable.

Who Should Attend

Anyone can attend an MHFA course, but an interest in mental health and wellbeing is desirable. This course provides the skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid for mental health and how to effectively support those experiencing distress.

Course Outcomes

The course will:

  • Give a deeper understanding of the issues that impact on and relate to people’s mental health
  • Teach practical skills that can be used every day, including being able to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and feel confident guiding people towards support

Certification & Qualifications

When a heart attack occurs, a defibrillator can save lives. In fact, prompt and proper use by a first responder is recognised by the Resuscitation Council (UK) as the best way to increase the chances of survival. In this half-day course, we cover the importance and proper use of defibrillators, as well as how to recognise the signs of angina or heart attack and deal with them appropriately. This specially designed programme has been adapted from the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course to meet the needs of people who work within a school setting. The course follows the syllabus set by the Health & Safety Executive and is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for training of candidates in first aid for low risk environments.

This refresher course will need to be taken no later than the expiry date of your last course taken. If this date has passed then you no longer qualified to hold the qualification and a re-qualification course may not be open to you due to timescales. Please check with your previous accrediting body. Proof of prior certification is required for this course.
