First Aid Paediatric and Early Years

Designed for those working in education and childcare, this two-day first aid course is tailored to first aid personnel who primarily work with children or infants. The course, which meets the requirements of the National Child Minding Association (NCMA), the Pre-School Learning Alliance (PLA) and OFSTED, covers a comprehensive range of topics around paediatric first aid care.

Overview

Providing first aid for infants and children requires specific first aid skills which are not always covered by other first aid courses. In this two-day course, designed for those working in education and childcare, specific issues related to paediatric childcare are covered, and the course also includes a number of interactive exercises to help learners.

Aims and Objectives

This course aims to introduce the subject of paediatric first aid care, and help teachers, team leaders and anyone else involved in the education and childcare industries to gain the knowledge and expertise they need to deal with emergency situations promptly, effectively and safely.

Duration

This is a 2 day course.

Prerequisites

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, learners are expected to have a good understanding of both spoken and written English.

This course is ideal for any member of any organisation who is involved with childcare or education and is responsible for the care of children.

Content

The course covers a wide range of first aid techniques, with a focus on resuscitation skills for adults, infants and children. Subjects covered include:

  • Acting safely and effectively when an accident occurs
  • Treatment and priorities of care for the unconscious patient
  • Recognising cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Safe and prompt treatment of bleeding patients
  • Recognition of common childhood complaints and illnesses, and appropriate care
  • Developing an effective emergency plan for when accidents occur
  • Keeping and managing records following workplace and care setting accidents

 

Course Benefits

This course equips attendees with the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective and safe first aid care to children and infants in their care, as well as qualifying them for a HSE-approved First Aid qualification on successful completion of the course.

For employers, the successful award of the HSE-approved First Aid qualification to employees will ensure that they are compliant with the 1981 Health and Safety First Aid Regulations (as set out by the Health and Safety Executive).

Certification

Successful candidates will be awarded a plastic qualification card on completion and will later receive a full-colour A4 certificate awarded by WorkSafe Training Systems. Retraining will be required within three years of the date of issue.

This specially designed programme has been adapted from the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course to meet the needs of people who work within a school setting. The course follows the syllabus set by the Health & Safety Executive and is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for training of candidates in first aid for low risk environments.

This refresher course will need to be taken no later than the expiry date of your last course taken. If this date has passed then you no longer qualified to hold the qualification and a re-qualification course may not be open to you due to timescales. Please check with your previous accrediting body. Proof of prior certification is required for this course.
