IPAF Harness Awareness & User Course (HA & HU)

This course combines IPAF's new Harness Awareness and Harness User courses together, in a half day classroom course. Designed for candidates who need to use or wear a harness themselves, who are generally MEWP operators.

Who should attend

This course is aimed at personnel who are, or will be, responsible for Working at Height platforms in the workplace which will involve the use of harnesses and lanyards to prevent falls. 

This course combines the 2 IPAF Harness courses:

IPAF Harness Awareness

This theory only course provides the essential knowledge to enable a successful candidate to select, monitor, manage and plan the correct use of Harnesses and lanyards for use in a MEWP and is a prerequisite for the IPAF Harness User training course.

Objectives

At the end of the course candidates will:

  • Have an awareness of how to correctly identify and select the appropriate form of personal protection against falls from MEWPs
  • Have a theoretical awareness of how to pre-use check, use, maintain and store a harness and lanyard with the manufacturer's instructions
  • Have a theoretical awareness of how harnesses and lanyards should be fitted and adjusted.

Course Theory Test

Individual, 30 question, open book, written test with explanation of pass requirements.

IPAF Harness User Course

This assessment-only course evaluates the candidate’s practical application of the knowledge gained in the Awareness course and is a prerequisite for the IPAF Harness Inspector training course.

Objectives

Upon completion successful candidates will:

  • Demonstrate competence in the correct pre-use check of a harness and lanyard
  • Demonstrate competence in how to correctly fit and adjust a harness and lanyard for use in a MEWP
  • Demonstrate the correct anchor point to attach the lanyard to in a MEWP and adjust the lanyard to be effective.

Assessment

This 15 minute assessment will involve an assessment of:
  • Pre-use check of a harness and lanyard
  • Fitting and adjustment of a harness and lanyard for use in a MEWP
  • Attaching to the correct anchor point in a MEWP and adjustment ofthe lanyard to provide effective restraint.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both assessments, candidates will receive IPAF licence certificates for both categories, which can be acccess via the IPAF E-PAL app.

Renewal

These 2 qualification can renewed by passing the full training course again after five years.

NOTE:  Further training is also required beyond this course to conduct periodic statutory Inspections of Harnesses and Lanyards, for use in a MEWP in the form of Harness Inspector Training and assessment.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites required for this course although each individual should bring their own harness and work restraint lanyard.

This course combines four hours of classroom and practical training and assessment on safe operation selection and use of Push-Along Vertical Personnel Lifts (PAV). The course is designed to provide attendees with certification for the use of PAVs, and will cover the legislation, safety issues and best practice around the use of these machines.
