IPAF Safety Harness User and Inspection
The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) Harness Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours instruction and provides delegates with the vital information and understanding on how to use full body safety harnesses and restraint lanyards when using a range of Working at Height Platforms

It also covers skills such as the selection and pre-inspection of the equipment and will allow the user to carry out the minimum 6 monthly inspections as required by Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). The IPAF certification is internationally recognised qualification for use of such equipment.
Duration
Half day.
Who should attend
This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for using Working at Height platforms in the work place which will involve the use of harnesses and lanyards to prevent falls. There are no pre-requisites required for this course although each individual should bring their own harness and work restraint lanyard.
Objectives
At the end of the course the operator will:
• Be aware of the relevant Health and Safety regulations
• Be aware of the needs with regard to Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) against falls from height and the relevant requirements
• Be able to identify and select the correct forms of PPE to prevent against falls from height
• Be able to inspect and maintain a harness and lanyard
• Be able to fit and use the harness and lanyard identified.
Course Content
- Introduction
- Legislation
- Hierarchy (safe work at height)
- Harnesses and Lanyard types
- Harness / lanyard choice
- Pre-use checks and correct usage
- Harness statement
- Theory test (pass or fail).
Assessment
A short, multiple choice test, as well as a practical test on inspecting and fitting the harness.
Certification
Successful candidates receive an IPAF Powered Access Licence certificate. This certification is valid for 5 years.

Prerequisites
A working knowledge of MEWPs is an advantage. Each delegate MUST bring with them the following: Date of Birth and National Insurance Number. For the practical assessment, candidates are required to bring the following:
- Full body harness
- Hi-visibility vest/jacket
- Hard hat
- Safety boots
- Safety glasses/goggles
- Full body harness with an adjustable restraint lanyard (both within inspection date)
- A current certificate of inspection
Failure to fulfil the PPE and inspection certificate requirements may, regrettably, result in you being excluded from the course.
