NRSWA Streetworks Unit 1 – Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (Operatives) - Cat and Genny

Commonly known as cat and genny - unit 01, this course is designed to train experienced operatives who are required to locate underground apparatus during roadworks, this course covers skills and techniques for avoiding danger, positioning apparatus, and reading office records.

Overview

The City & Guilds Streetworks Excavation & Reinstatement (6156) Unit 221 is designed for experienced operatives who are required to locate underground apparatus on the highway. The course will cover how to avoid danger from underground apparatus, as well as how to read office records and identify such apparatus.

Aims and Objectives

This course aims to equip participants with the skills required to identify underground apparatus, as well as operate planned location equipment such as the CAT and Genny.

This is a 1 day course.

Prerequisites

This course is designed for operatives with prior experience of street working. There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, learners are expected to have a good understanding of both spoken and written English.

Candidates are expected to bring the following:

  • Full body harness
  • Hi-visibility vest/jacket
  • Hard hat
  • Safety boots
  • Safety glasses/goggles

Content

This course is designed to cover the following topics:

  • Avoiding danger from underground apparatus (HSG47)
  • Drawing office records
  • Laying positions of utilities apparatus (NJUG 7)
  • Identification of utilities apparatus

The course culminates in an assessment compiling written and practical exercises.

Similar courses

This course, previously known as unit 02 is designed to ensure that candidates are able to carry out daily tasks in writing and guarding systems, to enable trainees take adequate measures to minimise inconvenience to the general public during street works. It covers a number of areas including planning and positioning, as well as understanding of safety zones and pedestrian walkbys. Please note that this course does not certify candidates to supervise setting out of signing, lighting and guarding.

More Information

In this course, previously known as unit 10, we review the supervision of setting out traffic lights, signs, cones and barriers for temporary Streetworks, in compliance with NRSWA. The course reviews the decision-making process for designing temporarily Streetworks, as well as how to manage the setup of such works and dealing with conflicts and disagreements. Please note that this course does not certify candidates to undertake the setting out of signing, lighting and guarding of temporary street works.
