Ladder Association - Working with Steps & Step Stools

Written with guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and, more recently, the Work at Height Regulations 2005. This 2.5 hour training course will ensure delegates have the knowledge and instruction to be able to use and select ladders and step ladders legally and safely.

Description

Overview

In this half-day course, delegates will be taught when it is appropriate to use a stepladder or step stool, be given guidance on safe use, storage and potential hazards, and will be informed on laws and standards relating stepladders and step stools. It will be of particular use to those who are infrequent users of stepladders and step stools in shops, offices, schools and the health sector.

Aims and Objectives

This course aims to give all attendees the knowledge and instruction that they need to be able to use and select ladders and step ladders in a safe and legal way. At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Assess and determine when it’s appropriate to use stepladders and step stools
  • Correctly locate and safely use stepladders and step stools
  • Visually inspect stepladders and step stools for damage before and after use

 

Duration

This is a half-day course.

Prerequisites

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, learners are expected to have a good understanding of both spoken and written English. They must also be fit and capable of stepping onto small steps, step stools and dome type stools.

Delegates must wear closed toe shoes that have a sole with good grip. No backless or high heeled shoes will be allowed. The ideal clothing for this course would be trousers and a top that isn't too loose.

Content

This course consists of slide-led training, question sessions, a group exercise on Inspections and Hazard Analysis, and an individual questionnaire on the safe and effective use of stepladders and step stools. There are four assessment activities included in the duration of this course: 15 multiple choice questions, step/step stool fault finding exercise, a hazard analysis exercise and an exercise on carrying, positioning and stepping onto steps and step stools.

The course covers a range of topics that will give delegates an understanding of:

  • What they need to know about the law and standards relating to stepladders and step stools
  • Hazards in the use of stepladders and step stools
  • Storage and handling of stepladders and step stools

 

Course Benefits

This course will benefit learners by giving them a sound understanding of the safe use of steps and stepladders, which will aid in the reduction of risk and accidents.

Certification

A Ladder Association certificate and LadderCard will be issued to successful delegates who complete the theory and practical assessment sessions at the required level. The course has a five year validity period.

It is well-known that misuse of ladders are a common hazard for causing injury to workers. This course is designed to outline the legislation around the use of ladders and how to inspect, register and use ladders to protect, inspect and operate safely. In order to take this course, the Ladder Association’s Ladder User Course must have been completed and passed before attempting the Ladder Association’s Ladder Inspection Course you must hold a valid Ladder Association identity card.
