ELCAS Package 3 - NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety

The new NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety has been designed, following extensive research, to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding required in the modern workplace. From 1st May 2021, this new qualification will be recognised as the standard qualification in health and safety for the non-safety specialist with Fire Safety responsibilities. This is now a standalone qualification and does not require any shared units from the National General Certificate.

Gold Standard Provider

Who Should Attend

This qualification is designed for anyone who has fire safety responsibilities in a small to medium sized organisation. It provides the knowledge and understanding, when combined with relevant experience, to carry out an effective fire risk assessment, as well as embed good practice in the workplace.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course candidates will be able to conduct and review fire risk assessments and advise on the fire preventive and protective measures within most workplaces.

The Fire Safety Certificate (FSC) will allow you to:

  •  Ensure your organisation meets its fire safety responsibilities;
  • Understand the risk to people and buildings from fire and explosion hazards;
  • Recognise what control measures will be required to prevent or mitigate the effects of fire and explosion;
  • Recognise what should be included in emergency plans and what should be done to ensure the effective evacuation of buildings; and
  • Prepare a fire risk assessment.

Course Content

This unit focuses on fire safety and risk management, and includes the following subjects:

FSC1 – Fire Safety

  • Managing Fire Safety
  • Principles of Fire and Explosion
  • Fuel, oxygen and ignition sources and control measures
  • Fire Protection in Buildings
  • Safety of People in the Event of Fire
  • Fire Safety Risk Assessment.

FC2 – Fire Safety Practical Application

The third unit (FC2) outlines the practical application of fire safety knowledge and is assessed via a practical assessment carried out in the delegates workplace.

Pre-Requisites

Learners are expected to have a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Assessment

One 24 hour Open Book Exam (OBE) completed online. This normally takes approximately 5 hours to complete, and one practical assignment carried out in the workplace.

Certification

This course is assessed by NEBOSH. Certificates are issued to all successful candidates.

Holders of the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety are also entitled to:

Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

Technician Membership (TIFPO) of the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO) and the qualification meets the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AMIFPO). Persons with the relevant skills and experience may also apply to join the IFPO Fire Risk Assessors Register.

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 13 SCQF credit points.
