SPA Supervisor

This course, targeted at those in a supervisory role, aims to provide basic information on health, safety and the environment, along with insight into understanding the implications of hazard recognition and risk assessment. It looks at the effect of these issues on individuals and the employer, and illustrates how individual behaviour can prompt a significant reduction in workplace accidents.

Overview

Supervisors have a responsibility for health and safety at the heart of their role, and in this 1-day classroom-based course, we look at the safety management system, how to organise a health and safety policy in your work place, how to perform risk assessments and accident investigations, and how to manage both those within your responsibility and your stakeholders.

Aims and Objectives

This course aims to give supervisors the knowledge they need to make a positive impact on their workplace, instill a culture of health and safety and reduce workplace accidents.

This is a 1 day course.

Pre-requisites: Please note that each delegate is required to bring with them the following: National Insurance Number, date of birth, current SPA Core Card (if applicable, when attending a Food & Drink or Petrol & Retail Course).

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for any a supervisory role who wishes to gain more advanced knowledge of health and safety in the workplace.

Content

The course is divided into eight modules.

Module 1 – Roles and Responsibilities

This session looks at the safety management system, as well as the continuous improvement cycle and the safety responsibilities of the client, the contractor management and yourself.

Module 2 – Organising the work

The session will introduce the concepts of information handover, communication, and planning, as well as including exercises on receiving client instruction and issuing work safely.

Module 3 – The individual

The session looks at individuals and dealing with the employee, how to change behaviour and your own role in managing staff.

Module 4 – Toolbox talks

The session looks at toolbox talks and when to perform them, as well as the methodology and monitoring processes behind them.

Module 5 – Accident probability

This session looks at a number of areas related to accident probability, including accident data, RIDDOR reporting, likely causes and review of accident data.

Module 6 – Accident investigation

In this session, the processes and key themes of accident investigation are set out, including ascertaining the root causes of an accident, the level of an accident, taking statements and managing the scene, and conducting analysis and reporting.

Module 7 – Safety monitoring and auditing

The session focuses on the need for safety inspections and audits, and how to carry these out and act on them.

Module 8 – Task design – method statements

This module looks at method statements and concludes with a review of the candidates' own views following this session, asking how they have modified their feelings with regard to procedures, method statements and risk assessment.

Course Benefits

This course can give a valuable insight into the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor or manager in dealing with health and safety issues, and comes with a nationally-recognised certification.

Certification

Those who complete the course successfully will be awarded the SPA Supervisor Passport, valid for three years.
