City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education (Formerly PTLLS)
PTLLS is the acronym for the Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This qualification consists of four units. Each unit has a 3 credit value (within the QCF framework) which adds up to the 12 credits required to achieve this award. This is a mandatory qualification for those wishing to enter teaching in the regulated Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS) in England and forms part of the framework of qualification for teachers in the LLS. It allows teachers to progress on to the ‘Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ (CTLLS) and the ‘Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ (DTLLS). If taken as a stand-alone qualification, it can receive accreditation of prior learning (APL) within 6302 CTLLS, 7305 DTLLS, and the level 5 subject specialist diplomas for literacy, ESOL and numeracy.
Description
Micro-Teach Session
You will be required to undertake at least a 15 minute micro-teaching (delivery of a teaching session to peers in a learning setting) or teaching practice. The micro-teach / teaching practice delivery will be observed by the tutor/observer who will give feedback and complete an observation report; feedback will also be given by your peer group.
Teaching Practice Portfolio
You will be are encouraged to compile a teaching practice portfolio during your programme of study. The portfolio should be a concise log of your teaching practice and should include evidence of your micro-teach practice with related peer and self evaluations, justification, session plan and learning journals. The portfolio will also include evidence of your blended learning activities. The teaching practice portfolio is not a mandatory requirement of the PTLLS Award, but is deemed good practice.
Reflective Learning Journal
You will be required to write four reflective learning journals (one following each completed unit) using the pro-forma provided
Level of Achievement
This award may be achieved at level 3 or level 4. This would be negotiated following your initial assessment. Either level would allow you progression to the CTLLS or DTLLS.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this PTLLS qualification but you will be required to have evidence of vocational skills in the area in which you wish to teach.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
As part of the blended learning style of delivery this professional teaching qualification is delivered intensely over a period of four consecutive days. Teaching and learning strategies during delivery will include: group discussion, group activities, micro-teaching, presentations, reading activities, research activities, role play etc. Additional pre-course work will also be issued.
This is a nationally recognised City and Guilds qualification and it is suitable for anyone who wants to work in the LLS as a tutor, teacher, instructor and/or coach role. It also allows trainers to progress on to the ‘Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ and the ‘Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ (DTLLS).
Assessment
There are four assessment activities to be completed to the required level for the achievement of this qualification. Three are theory based and one is practical based. These will be issued pre-course and may be started pre-course, during the course or after the course (completion date to be agreed with your tutor).
